Nearly 150 trees coming to city

SANDUSKY — Rooted in the city's bank account for a couple of years now, a state grant continues to pay major dividends for planting new trees in the area. During a recent public meeting, Sandusky city commissioners approved a $70,000 expense for the local government's annual tree planting initiative. The project consists of planting nearly 150 new trees within boulevard areas across various neighborhoods. All work to plant the trees should wrap up by June 1. They're slated to go in and around various neighborhoods with many slated for Buchanan, Harrison, Pearl, Pierce, Polk, Tyler and 50th streets. This marks the culmination of a two-year process to plant more trees citywide. Back in 2024, the city received a $125,000 grant from the Ohio Division of Forestry. Planting began in 2025 with roughly $55,000 spent on more than 110 new trees. In total, this $125,000 grant should add 260 trees across the city. No city money went toward this initiative. Even before this grant, officials remain committed to planting trees. For instance, the city's forestry department planted 190 trees in 2024 and almost 150 trees in 2023. And every year, the city hosts an Arbor Day celebration, inviting children to take part in planting a tree and learning more about their importance. Trees provide many advantages, officials noted, which include: • Increasing property values • Reducing a household's energy consumption for heating and cooling • Removing pollution from the atmosphere • Improving air quality and human health "This is an investment that will improve residents' quality of life and revitalize the southside neighborhood," according to a city statement.
