Police say man targeted girls

PERKINS TWP. — A Michigan man allegedly tried to lure underage girls into his hotel room on Saturday. He also caused his daughter to be hospitalized after allegedly giving her sleeping medication.David Sims, 30, of Ypsilanti, faces these charges: attempted abduction, a fourth-degree felony; child endangering, a first-degree misdemeanor; three counts of criminal child enticement, which are first-degree misdemeanors; unlawful restraint, a third-degree misdemeanor; possessing criminal tools, a first-degree misdemeanor; and possessing dangerous drugs, a first-degree misdemeanor. The charges all stem from incidents at Great Wolf Lodge at about 6:20 p.m., according to a Perkins police report. Police first responded to the resort after learning that a man had allegedly inappropriately touched a child and offered them drugs.Police learned the suspect, Sims, was at the resort with his 4-year-old daughter, the report states.Detective Joe Rotuno said Sims was walking around the resort's water park asking people where his daughter was. Sims allegedly approached a group of underage girls and asked them to help him look for his daughter, but they felt uncomfortable and refused."He never made attempts to go to a lifeguard or hotel staff," Rotuno said.The three girls went to a hot tub, and Sims allegedly followed them into the hot tub and sat down with them, Rotuno said. He then allegedly asked the girls to come to his hotel room and offered them marijuana and alcohol.The girls refused and tried to leave the hot tub. Sims allegedly wrapped his legs around one girl, restraining her before she was able to free herself and get away, Rotuno said.Several people, including resort security and the parent of one girl, witnessed the alleged incident, confronted Sims and followed him to his room, Rotuno said.When police arrived, they went to Sims' room, and inside they found his daughter lying on a bed and apparently under the influence of a drug, Rotuno said. After speaking with the girl, officers learned Sims allegedly gave his daughter four or five gummy bears containing melatonin, which made her sleepy and nauseous.The girl was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center to get examined, and she was later released to her mother, the report states.Rotuno praised the resort's security for their handling of the situation."Great Wolf did a fabulous job," he said. "Without their help, this probably would have skated by."Rotuno said Sims does not have any sex offenses on his criminal record.
