Cody Thompson starts season on Chiefs' practice squad

Cody Thompson was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. A day later the Chiefs announced they had signed the Huron High School graduate to their practice squad.Thompson, a wide receiver who led the Chiefs with 12 receptions for 108 yards in the preseason, is one of 10 players who will be on Kansas City's practice squad. That means he will practice with the team but not suit up for games.Practice squad players earn a minimum of $8,000 per week per the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.Thompson could be signed by another team, but only if that team added him to its 53-man active roster.The Chiefs have five wide receivers on their current 53-man roster — Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle. De'Anthony Thomas is another receiver who will join the team next week after serving a one-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.Thompson, who signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo, had a strong training camp and was targeting 22 times in four preseason games — more than any Chiefs receiver.The Chiefs, who open the season Sunday at Jacksonville, also signed Jody Fortson, a wide receiver from Valdosta State, to their practice squad.Cody Thompson at Chiefs rookie minicamp.
