Port authority operations manager to leave in May

VERMILION — The Vermilion Port Authority is preparing for a key staffing transition after operations manager Arron Bias recently announced he will be leaving this spring to pursue an opportunity with the U.S. Coast Guard. Bias told board members he is aiming to leave in mid-May. He's worked with the port authority for several years and has been involved in day-to-day operations, project coordination and seasonal planning. During a recent public meeting, he also discussed ongoing work tied to docks, dredging and other waterfront needs, underscoring the role he has played in helping manage Port business. Bias told the board members will need to begin looking for a new operations manager quickly. He has one possible candidate in mind, a retired Navy engineer, but encouraged board members to speak with others who may be interested. He also provided the board with the job description and materials from the last time the port authority advertised the position. His departure could also affect this year's annual poker run. Bias said he has been coordinating the event, but because he will not be here that weekend, the port does not currently have anyone lined up to take it over. He said the event brought in about $3,000 last year, though labor costs reduced that total. Chairman Peter Corogin praised Bias during the meeting, saying he is "really happy for Arron," that the move is "the right move for him to explore," and that Bias "has done a great job at the Port." Corogin also said he believes Bias will do everything possible to help with the transition before he leaves. The port authority's next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex.
