26 years of fun under the sun

SANDUSKY — As the weather warms up, people seeking fun activities can look forward to a variety of events, including the famous Ohio Bike Week. The annual motorcycle rally and festival is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, with this year's event running for nine days between Friday, May 29 and Saturday, June 6. What started as a small motorcycle meetup has expanded into one of the region's largest and most well-known events. Humble beginnings and rapid growth Led by organizer Steve Ernst, Ohio Bike Week has evolved from a modest local rally into a large-scale, multi-day festival that attracts visitors from across the country. Ohio Bike Week dates back to 1999, when it launched as a state H.O.G. — Harley Owners Group — rally. Ernst said that in its early days, the event was limited to just two blocks along Columbus Avenue — a far cry from what it would later become. A major turning point came in 2004, when Ernst, president of Advantage Entertainment, was brought in to expand the rally to a national level. That vision quickly gained momentum, and by its peak before the COVID-19 pandemic, the event stretched from Shoreline Drive to Adams Street and attracted more than 200,000 attendees. In 2009, another unexpected change altered the event's course. Ernst's Advantage Entertainment operated Ohio Bike Week with Roeder Harley-Davidson. But when the latter closed just weeks before that year's rally, Advantage became the sole operator, taking over Ohio Bike Week entirely. Big names and even bigger obstacles Music has always been a major draw at Ohio Bike Week, showcasing a notable lineup of national artists throughout the years. Acts like Bret Michaels, Ted Nugent, Travis Tritt, 38 Special, Ace Frehley, Lita Ford, Eddie Money, Montgomery Gentry, Night Ranger, Loverboy and Jackyl have all taken the stage. However, booking these major acts hasn't been easy. Ernst explained that the event often falls under "radius clauses" tied to nearby markets like Toledo and Cleveland, which temporarily limit artists from performing in certain geographic areas. Post-pandemic industry shifts have brought more complications, with many performers raising their fees while cutting back on tour dates. "We compete with county fairs, casinos and festivals," Ernst said. "There are also two huge summer festivals that book many of the acts we would consider." A community built on more than just bikes For Ernst, the heart of Ohio Bike Week isn't just the motorcycles or the music — it's the people. Over the years, the event has built a close-knit team, with many members staying for 15 years or more. Ernst believes it has also become a celebration and a place for connection, with over 20 couples choosing to get married during the festivities. "We've proudly raised tens of thousands of dollars for dozens of charities over the years," Ernst said. "We are also grateful for the trust community leaders, sponsors and event partners place in us."
