Firefighters discover body at scene of Sandusky fire

SANDUSKY — Sandusky firefighters dealing with an early morning apartment fire Sunday found a body inside when they searched the residence. Erie County coroner Dr. Brian Baxter identified the man as Steve Davis, 47, of 1614 Remington Ave.Capt. Matt Lesch of the Sandusky Fire Department said firefighters were called to Lake Point Apartments on Remington Avenue near Cleveland Road at 1:17 a.m. Sunday.When they arrived, the door to the apartment was hot and smoke was seen coming from underneath and door and out the window.Firefighters forced the door open and were met with heavy black smoke. They brought up a fire hose and put the fire out. Firefighters opened windows and ventilated the apartment.When they searched the apartment, they found Davis inside in the living room and notified police.Baxter said no signs of foul play were reported, and an autopsy will be performed by the Lucas County coroner, probably on Monday morning."He's already being transported up there," Baxter said Sunday.Police investigating the death are waiting for the results of the autopsy, said Detective Sgt. Kevin Youskievicz of the Sandusky Police Department.Lesch said the apartment suffered heavy damage, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.A woman moving in to the apartment next door said Sunday she noticed smoke damage in her apartment as well.Fire caused heavy damage to an apartment on Remington Avenue early Sunday morning.
