The secret to longevity

Does being socially isolated cause poor health in later life? Or does being in poor health cause an older person to be socially isolated? The answer is both. In a study of older Americans, titled Social Isolation Changes and Long-Term Outcomes Among Older Adults, it found not being actively engaged in the community as an older person is a cause for premature death, disability and dementia among 13,649 adults aged 50 years and older. This study found that when older adults became more socially isolated, their chances of dying, developing disabilities or dementia went up, no matter how isolated they were at the start of the study. These findings show why it's important to prevent growing isolation in older adults, so they can stay healthier and keep their bodies and minds working well, longer. Add to that, the fact that more older Americans are divorced without children, widowed without children or never married and never had children. The Mather Institute estimates 28% of the 55-plus-year-olds in the U.S. are childless. Putting yourself in social situations, as an older person, is easier said than done. If you are looking for opportunities to expand your social experiences while learning new things in the process, an easy place to begin is taking steps to learn what is going on within the local schools. For instance, Perkins High School is hosting events for adults, especially older adults. Those who attend will learn a thing or two about how things have changed/are changing in the 21st century and meet a few like-minded people and expand your social connections just because you showed up. Perkins High School has an educational program called The Academy Experience. This is coursework where the students select their field of study and, at the end of the school year, give a 15-minute presentation to prove their knowledge on the subject matter. Best of all, these young people want retirees from area communities to attend. Subjects include the fields of broadcasting, business, chiropractic care, dentistry, education/music education, engineering, exercise science, financial planning, golf, health care, interior design, law enforcement, marine ecology, medicine, ministry, neurology, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychology/counseling, radiology, skilled trades, sports/athletics and veterinary medicine. Presentations will be taking on several different days starting on April 13 and continuing through May 6.
