Orchestra brings silent films to life

HURON TWP. — The Firelands Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to experience a truly unique fusion of film and live music with its upcoming Charlie Chaplin Cinema Concert. It's scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron. This special performance marks the orchestra's first-ever cinema concert, pairing a screening of two classic silent films with live orchestral accompaniment for an unforgettable evening of sight and sound. In this inventive program, members of the orchestra take center stage as they perform live scores synchronized in real time to two beloved films by Charlie Chaplin: "Shoulder Arms" and "A Dog's Life." Carl Topilow, the orchestra's music director and conductor, guides the ensemble through the intricate process of performing live film scores where timing, precision and artistry must align perfectly with the action unfolding on screen. Without spoken dialogue, the music becomes the storytelling voice that transports audiences back to the golden age of cinema while showcasing the artistry and precision of a live performance. Originally released in 1918, "Shoulder Arms" offers Chaplin's humorous yet heartfelt take on life as a soldier during World War I.
