Truck pursuit tops 130 mph

SANDUSKY — A vehicle pursuit that started in Sandusky County ended in the city of Sandusky early Saturday morning. Just before 4 a.m., Erie County deputies were alerted to the fact that state troopers were pursuing a truck eastbound on U.S. 6 in Sandusky County, about to enter Erie County. The truck was reportedly traveling at 130 mph. Deputies attempted to position themselves in Margaretta Township to deploy spike strips, but the chase reached them too quickly. After winding down several Margaretta Township roads, the truck got on Bardshar Road northbound before turning right onto northeast-bound Fremont Ave. (U.S. 6). Instead of continuing on Venice Road by turning right or left, the truck went straight, continuing on Fremont Avenue. That road is a dead end just before Sandusky Bay. The truck sped down a driveway to Cold Creek before coming to a stop. All three people in the truck were detained at gunpoint. The alleged driver, Darren Frenk, 20, of Vermilion, was charged with one count of OVI, a first-degree misdemeanor and one count of failure to obey the signal or order of a police officer, a third-degree felony. The two passengers were later released without charges, according to Sgt. Josh Bolduan with the Fremont post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The truck was inventoried and towed from the scene. As of late Sunday, Frenk remains locked up in the Sandusky County Jail awaiting his initial appearance in court.
