Police: Store burglarized

PERKINS TWP. — A Perkins Township store was burglarized early Sunday morning. At about 4:15 a.m., Perkins police were called to Drug Mart in the 3700 block of Milan Road (U.S. 250) for the report from store security that a man threw a rock through a window, shattering it. Officers from Perkins arrived and were joined shortly thereafter by Sandusky police and Erie County Sheriff's Office deputies, who then set up a perimeter around the store. The Register was on scene as the incident unfolded. At one point, deputies approached the shattered window armed with AR-style rifles. They announced themselves as deputies and ordered anyone inside to come out with their hands up. No one emerged from the store. After about an hour, a store keyholder arrived, and a team of law enforcement officers was able to enter the front of the store and sweep the interior. No one was located in the store. Later Sunday, a suspect was identified and arrested. Jose Antonio Montanez, 36, of Erie Street in Sandusky, was charged with breaking and entering and vandalism, both fifth-degree felonies; obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor; failure to comply, a first-degree misdemeanor; and resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor.
