Fire breaks out on Huron Pier

At least one person illegally torched materials on Sunday afternoon within a grassy, weeded area adjacent to the Huron North Main Pier.Huron firefighters intended to use the space for a controlled burn on Monday.But just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, someone or multiple people entered an unauthorized area off the pier and unlawfully set fire at a space where cattails and phragmites are located.Many people noticed the thick black smoke billowing into the blue sky. Large flames also appeared on the ground level.Nobody was hurt.As a precaution, however, Huron firefighters told people located in certain areas on the pier to stay put for about 90 minutes until the flames died down. Firefighters didn't want people walking toward the fire."We have a high suspicion that someone started it intentionally," Huron fire Capt. Kurt Schafer said.
