75 years ago, 1941: Fire swept through the ancient walled city in the heart of defenseless Manilla as Japanese planes rained bombs in a thickly populated district crowded with religious, education, medical and government buildings and, it was asserted, machine gunned civilians as they fled.50 years ago, 1966: The number of foreign visitors to the U.S. would top the 1 million mark in 1966, for the second consecutive year. More than 1,150,000 will have visited the U.S. from overseas by year's end. It was estimated the visitors spent $460 million for food, lodging and entertainment.25 years ago, 1991: A downtown Toledo riverfront mall that was to be a cornerstone of economic rebirth for the struggling city was being used to shelter a growing number of homeless people. They lived in tunnels at the abandoned Portside Festival Marketplace. Some had gone into parts of the building which once housed boutique speciality shops and trendy restaurants.10 years ago, 2006: James Brown, the undeniable "Godfather of Soul," told friends from his hospital bed he was looking forward to performing on New Year's Eve, even though he was ill with pneumonia. His heart gave out a few hours later, on Christmas morning. The pompadoured dynamo died of heart failure. He was 73 years old.
