Farm visits school

PORT CLINTON — Students at Immaculate Conception School attended an "egg-citing" assembly on Friday. Farmer Chris Byerly — of Bring the Farm to You in Centerburg — brought rabbits, chicks, a duck, a hen and a rooster for students to learn about. The rooster wasn't shy, and he made his presence known throughout the program, which made the students laugh every time. Byerly explained how eggs can come in different colors and how chicks can hatch from them. He showed the students a chick that was several days old, a chick that was a few weeks old and a fully grown hen. "Our mission is to reconnect people with their food," Byerly said. "We try to offer farm experiences for people who might not get a farm experience." Each time Byerly brought out a new animal, students gave him a big reaction. That's what he enjoys the most. "I like bringing them something they haven't had a close-up experience with," he added. One of the favorites among the students and teachers was an Angora rabbit. It had long, soft fur. While taking the rabbit around to each class, Byerly shared how the rabbit's fur is very clean, and it can be spun into yarn.
