Washington, Plantz share MVP honors of senior game

SANDUSKY — One final ride for Julian Washington was bittersweet. The Margaretta senior got to play with teammate Judah Keller again while teaming up with AAU partner Walter Plantz from Genoa. Washington and Plantz shared MVP honors, leading Team Black to a 117-91 win over Team White in the Spy Report All-Star Night senior game. "Playing with Walter one last time, it means everything," Washington said. "We have been playing each other for a long time, really ever since we were in fourth grade. The last couple years, we've teamed up in AAU. It's been great to play with Judah one last time. He's going to play football and I'm going to do my thing in basketball." Team Black never trailed, scoring 14 straight points to go up 18-4 after 3-pointers from Vermilion's Brock Meyers and Otsego's Devin Silva. The high-octane Black offense hit 14 triples on the night, going up 56-38 at halftime. "It's a great environment," Washington said. "There's a talent and guys that are going to play college basketball. It was great to be here. I was excited all week to play. It was very fun." Black pushed the lead to 22 points on a Washington 3 in the second half. White tried to rally behind Sandusky's Dale Johnson, Huron's Quentin Conway and Perkins' Kellen Glass, but Black was too tough. The margin reached 27 points (86-59) on two free throws from Clyde's Oscar Webb. As the winning team, Team Black's players received $50 gift cards to Danny Cafe's in Rossford. "The game of basketball is a competitive game," Washington said. "I try to tell everyone that even though it's an all-star game, let's go out and press and go get after these guys. We all have winning spirits and that's what we came out and did." Plantz finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Washington scored 21 points. Silva contributed 19 points for Team Black. Team White was led by Johnson, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Conway added 13 points, Glass had 12 points, Edison's Coltyn Meagrow tallied 11 points including two huge dunks and Huron's Parker Schafer scored 10 points. Washington recently wrapped up an incredible career at Margaretta with 2,025 career points three district titles and over 80 wins. "This has meant everything to me," Washington said. "Coming from another school and going into a program with welcoming arms, it meant everything. I couldn't be more pleased with how my four years went. I give a great respect to (Margaretta head) coach (Steve) Keller and (assistant) coach (Jake) Meisler for how they handled me the last four years." Team Black wins underclass Behind 22 points from Eastwood's Brayden Liudhardt, Team Black won the underclass game 107-100. Perkins junior Bryce Davie and Clyde freshman JeCori Roberts each added 14 points for Team Black. "It was very fun," Davie said. "All of the players on my team were very nice and pretty cool. They were all good players. I thought we shared the ball well and shot the ball well." Team White took control early, going up 29-14 following scores from Sandusky teammates Cam Jones and Ahmaj Woolfork. Team Black cut into the deficit, slicing within 50-44 at halftime after Liudhardt made two free throws. Willard's Jaxson Hall and Perkins' Grant Kuhnle hit 3s early in the second half to tie the game at 50. White went back up, but Davie and Liudhardt each scored for a 65-62 lead. The teams went back and forth from there. Late, a 3 from Calvert's Grady Otterbach put Black up 100-95. Liudhardt scored to make it 102-95 before Jones scored and followed it with a triple to bring White within 102-100. But, Genoa's Myles Mollenhauer hit two free throws and Roberts canned a 3 for the final margin. Grayson Jones had 18 points for Team White, Jones registered 14 points and Margaretta's Kale Bailey added 10 points. "We try to come out here and compete in everything we do," Davie said. "Both teams had some pretty good players. Each game and possession was pretty fun. It was very competitive." Perkins just finished up the best season in program history recently. The Pirates went 25-3, winning the first regional title in program history. Davie will return next season with bigger goals in mind. "I didn't know some of the kids on my team, but we messed together pretty well," Davie said. "We had good communication and it was fun to see kids I've never played before."
