Lane, Lazzara co-MVPs of senior all-star game

SANDUSKY — By the end of the night, Margaretta's Cassidy Lane was exhausted. Fresh off of a road softball game at Monroeville, the senior played a big part in Team White's comeback against Team Black at the Spy Report All-Star Night on Thursday. Lane tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds as White topped Black 76-70 in overtime of the senior game. "It was pretty fun," Lane said. "Softball was a close game and then we started pulling away. Right before I came, I had one more at-bat and I hit a home run. I told them I had to go then and play some basketball." Lane shared Most Valuable Player honors with Norwalk's Trinity Lazzara, who topped White with 23 points. "It was really exciting, especially when you haven't played competitive basketball for a while," Lazzara said. "To be in the situation we were in, it was really fun. That's why you play basketball." Black led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but trailed 70-67 as the clock ticked under 10 seconds to play. Bellevue's Bailey Nichols was fouled shooting a 3 with 6.7 seconds left. She made all three freebies to tie the game. White didn't get a shot off at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime. The overtime was a first to five points and White wasted little time winning. Lane opened the extra session with a three-point play. After an empty possession by Black, Lazzara canned a 3 to give White the win. "It's super fun," Lane said. "These are the best seniors in the area and it's great to have one last game together. We had a lot of fun. It was amazing." Black led 11-2 early and pushed the lead as big as 36-24 when Seneca East's Izzy Stockmaster hit a 3. White chipped away at the lead, using a 9-0 run to tie the game at 62 when Willard's Corrin Gettys scored. "Sometimes it's fun to play with people you don't know," Lazzara said. "You get to see different skillsets. The teammates I do know from AAU, it's really fun because I'll never get to play with them again." Oak Harbor's Reagan Markley led Team Black with 33 points. "It's still a basketball game," Lane said. "I know sometimes people don't play defense. My teammates were telling me to play more defense." Zibert MVP of underclass Port Clinton junior Alana Zibert knows a thing or two about knocking down 3-pointers. The single-season record holder for the Redskins, Zibert kept knocking them down in the underclass game Thursday. Zibert hit five 3s, leading Team White to a 78-70 win over Team Black. "I thought it was pretty great," Zibert said. "I've never really actually played with them before. I went into this scared, but now I realize I don't really have anything to be afraid of." Black led 16-7 early when Calvert's Megan Rombach scored. The lead was 31-22 later following a three-point play from Genoa's Makenna Moritz, but White got within 42-37 by halftime after a triple from Gibsonburg's Elly Evarts. Black kept control, going up 52-42 on two free throws from Bellevue's Ava Jakubcin-Theis. Zibert's 3-pointer brought White within 52-49. Two free throws from Norwalk's Emmie Leber and a 3 from Perkins' Mallorie Jones gave White the lead. "I hadn't really touched the ball since the season ended," Zibert said. "I came into this thinking I wasn't going to make much. I think I exceeded my expectations." White went up as much as 63-57 following another 3-pointer from Evarts, but Black rallied to tie the game at 68 following two free throws from Willard's Emelia Tallman and a 3 from Bellevue's Mazie Gracemyer. Evarts hit a 3 before Leber and Norwalk's Alyssa Gruhlke each scored to take control once again. Team Black was led by Moritz's 13 points while Gracemyer added 10 points. Norwalk's Jo Jackson tallied 12 points and 14 rebounds for White while Leber scored 11 points. "They're really supportive," Zibert said. "We didn't play selfishly. I think I kind of thought that's what was going to happen. I think everybody did good at trying to make everyone else look better than themselves."
