Keep hope for the Hillerys

SANDUSKY — An upcoming benefit supports a father and husband who's well known and beloved by many in the community. The Shamrockin Cancer: Hope for the Hillerys event takes place from 3-9 p.m. on Saturday from the Firelands Association of Realtors Hall, 2710 Campbell St., in Sandusky near the Perkins fire station. Erin Hillery "was recently diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma," according to an event statement. It's a rare and highly aggressive form of cancer. For a $15 admission fee, the dinner event includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad and breadsticks provided by Ward Catering. People can order dine-in or carryout. People can purchase tickets by visiting Scarlett O'Hair Salon & Spa, 912 W. Perkins Ave, Sandusky Additionally, people can raise even more funds through a live auction, silent auction, raffles, a meat board and more with all prizes donated. All proceeds raised aim to cover at least some of Erin's medical bills. For those who can't attend but still want to donate, they can do so via Venmo through the account @Erin-Hillery. "Treatment is ongoing, and Erin will have to face another major surgery in June with a long road to full recovery," it noted. "If you know Erin personally, you are aware of his unwavering commitment to his friends, family and neighbors." Jami Tallman-Townsend, a longtime family friend who's helping coordinate the event, provided some more context: • His condition: "Less than a year ago, Erin was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma. Since then, he has faced each day with remarkable strength and determination, striving to remain a steady and loving presence for his wife of 18 years, Kristen, and their two sons, Connor, 18, and Carson, 15." • His character: "Erin is a devoted family man and a true friend to many. He brings light wherever he goes, always showing up for others with kindness, curiosity and genuine care. He's the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Whether cheering on his sons at swim meets and band events or spending time with family and friends, Erin's presence makes people feel supported, valued, and loved." • His career: "For the past 11 years, Erin has been a respected team leader at Whirlpool Corp. in Clyde. Before that, he was a dedicated manager at Fresh Mark in Salem, Ohio. His strong work ethic and leadership have left a lasting impact on everyone he's worked with. Due to his condition, Erin has been unable to work and faces a long road to recovery: physically, emotionally, and financially." • His fight: "While Erin may appear 'normal' on the outside, he is fighting one of the toughest battles of his life. Neuroendocrine carcinoma is a rare and complex cancer that varies greatly from case to case. Last year, Erin underwent emergency surgery to remove cancerous tumors from his colon after being rushed to the hospital. Since then, another tumor has been discovered in a difficult location. His medical team is allowing time for it to grow to improve the chances of successful removal, and he is now preparing for a second major surgery scheduled for June." • His event: "Hope for the Hillerys is a benefit event organized by friends of Erin and Kristen to help ease that burden. With the generous support of local businesses and community members, this event aims to raise funds to assist with mounting medical expenses and provide support for the family during this challenging time."
