Kids see cows and corn

GREEN SPRINGS — Agriculture is a big part of the Clyde-Green Springs community. Some of the youngest Fliers in the district got a taste of the industry thanks to Green Springs Elementary School, the district's FFA program and local agriculture organizations who recently gathered at the school for Third Grade Ag Day. "This is one way to introduce agriculture to students who may not have any experience with it and teach about its importance," FFA adviser Brynn Pope said. Through this event, students who live on a farm and those who don't both have a chance to be exposed to the industry, Green Springs Elementary principal Randy Stockmaster said. Third Grade Ag Day has been an annual event for several years. Stockmaster said it has evolved to what it is now compared to the past. "We started with some basic lessons and awareness in the classroom, and, since then, it's grown into what it is now," Stockmaster said. The day featured several agriculture-themed activities, including: • Agriculture Bingo in the classrooms led by FFA members • Antique and new agricultural equipment, cows and a bird feed making station provided by Young Farmers, a local nonprofit • A raffle prize table provided by Sunrise Cooperative Each student walked away with a prize and a T-shirt. Stockmaster credited the day to the FFA program's students and advisers and the outside organization.
