Longtime crossing guard mourned

NORWALK — A familiar face to Norwalk students is being remembered for his steady presence and kindness following his death this week. John M. Lynch Sr., a longtime school crossing guard for Norwalk police, died March 18 at his home at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer, according to his obituary. "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved crossing guard, John Lynch Sr.," the department said in a statement. "For many years, he was a familiar and reassuring presence in our community — greeting students with a smile, ensuring their safety and brightening the start and end of each school day." Norwalk assistant police Chief Michael Biller said Lynch played an important role in keeping students safe each day. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to his friends and family," Smith said. "He was a vital part of our commitment to school safety and will be missed." Lynch served as a crossing guard in Norwalk in recent years, a role he took great pride in after retiring from other work. He spent more than 30 years at Norwalk Furniture and later worked 11 years at Pepperidge Farm. According to his obituary, Lynch "loved all the kids and making sure they got across the street safely" and was known for greeting them each day and often handing out treats. Police said his daily presence left a lasting impression on students, families and colleagues. "His dedication, kindness and unwavering commitment made a lasting impact on countless families and colleagues alike," the department said. "John will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to live on in the lives he touched each day." Lynch was a 1973 graduate of Norwalk High School and spent most of his life in the area. Outside of work, he enjoyed bowling, attending car shows and talking with others about classic vehicles, especially his Chevrolet Nova. Family members described him as someone who "desired nothing more than to brighten someone's day with a laugh," and who kept his sense of humor even during difficult times. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Huron County Humane Society. Biller said the department's thoughts remain with Lynch's family and all those who knew him.
