Why 'No Kings'?

So what's the deal with the No Kings protests, anyhow? I see the questions online, the folks who wonder why we protest with this message when the USA doesn't have a king. That might just be a sarcastic way to respond to an event that they don't agree with, but regardless, it's a good question. The No Kings protests are based around the idea that in the USA, we don't want a king, but just as importantly, we don't want someone who acts like a king. We want our government, and those leading it, to be beholden to the checks and balances of those three branches so vital to our Founding Fathers — the legislature, the judiciary and the executive. If any one of these branches surrenders their authority to another, say the legislature refusing to take any action to check the power of the executive, then we are no longer a democracy, and we slide into an autocracy — defined as a system of government by one person with absolute power. Sounds a lot like a king to me.
