Sheriff: Man drove 100 mph while drunk

FLORENCE TWP. — A North Carolina man is facing an impaired driving charge after allegedly being clocked driving 100 mph on a Florence Township road on Friday. Just after midnight, the 38-year-old man from Lincolnton was reportedly driving eastbound on Ohio 113 near Cable Road when an Erie County deputy obtained a radar reading that showed the man was traveling nearly double the posted 55 mph speed limit, according to an Erie County Sheriff's Office report. The deputy gave chase, and it took nearly two miles for the driver to pull over near the 12000 block of Ohio 113. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he noticed the man was smoking a cigarette, but the deputy could still smell an "overwhelming odor of intoxicating beverages." The man was asked to get out of the vehicle and reportedly had trouble exiting the vehicle, the report states. After performing poorly in two field sobriety tests, the man was arrested and charged with OVI. He was additionally charged with speeding, 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, and no operator's license. All of the charges are misdemeanors. He was taken to jail and refused to provide a breath sample. The report noted that the man has one previous OVI conviction in 2025 in North Carolina.
