Adams Jr. High building to be used as transitional space

SANDUSKY— The future of the former Adams Junior High building seems to have a plan in place.If Sandusky Schools' $35 million bond issue passes in November, the building will be used as a transitional space for Hancock and Ontario elementary students for two years during construction of their new schools, according to Sandusky Schools superintendent Eugene Sanders.Portions of the building currently houses Sandusky Digital Academy and services provided by North Point Educational Service Center.The district's "Building Better Dreams" project costs $55 million, but the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission will pay for $35 million, or 64 percent of the total bill.The owner of a $100,000 home would pay about $13 a month.The plan includes:• One building for preschool and kindergarten students, which would be constructed at the site of Hancock Elementary• A second building for first and second graders, which would be constructed at the site of Ontario Elementary• A third school would be built next to Sandusky High School, the former Memorial Hospital site, to house students in third through sixth grades.The district would also like to attach a Global Education Center with a technology center and to renovate the high school's science labs, planetarium and pool.Once construction is complete, in 2019 or 2020, students would be reassigned to the new buildings, and district officials would further discuss the buildings' future. As of now, the district is interested in a revenue-based activity with the building concerning a educational, religious or civic purpose, Sanders said.
