Fatal crash on Cedar Point Causeway

Full Story 2:30 a.m.Despite heroic efforts to save his life, a 37-year old Lakewood man died Sunday after being thrown from his car just after 8 p.m. while driving the Cedar Point Causeway.The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Gustava Walls died at Firelands Regional Medical Center after injuries sustained when he failed to negotiate a curve at a high rate of speed while traveling northbound on the causeway, toward the park, and his 2007 Honda Accord went off the right side of the road, according to a press release from the Ohio State Patrol.Walls, who officially has a Lakewood address, has ties to Sandusky.Walls came back onto the road but went left of center and hit a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Justin A. Shauger, 31, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, the patrol stated. The pickup was traveling southbound on the causeway away from the park. Walls Accord spun out and struck a 2015 Hyundai Elantra driven by Heather N. Moore, 24, of Solon. Her vehicle was also traveling southbound.Walls was ejected from the Accord when it rolled multiple times off the left side of the road.In a matter of fate, Moore and her passenger 24-year-old Anne M. Chirdon, of Mentor, are both registered nurses in hospitals in Cleveland, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Eric Short.Instinct kicked in and the two ran to the car. When they did not see anyone in the car they searched until they found Walls among some trees, Short said.A car seat in the back of his car caused moments of concern that a child had been in the car until the group of people figured it had been empty"These two ladies are amazing," Short said.Without even realizing their injuries the two ladies began chest compressions and CPR. They were joined by others who helped.Moore suffered a fractured elbow and Chardon suffered pelvis and ankle injuries. They were treated at Firelands Regional Medical Center.Shauger and his passenger 8-year-old Aubrey Shauger were uninjured. Both were wearing seat belts.It appears alcohol was a factor as law enforcement and hospital staff noted the odor of alcohol on Walls, Short said.The investigation continues with the patrol sending blood from Walls for testing.Short said fatal crashes on the causeway are rare and could remember one other within about 15 years time.The crash forced Cedar Point to cancel the remaining Rev3 Triathlon taking place in part on the causeway.
