Caroline May Reed

EDWARDS, MO. — Caroline was born Jan. 17, 1928, in Evansport, Ohio. She graduated as valedictorian at Ayersville High School. She went to St. Vincent's Nursing School, where she graduated as an RN. She came to Sandusky to work at Providence Hospital. She met and married John Reed. She later worked as a secretary for Reed's Supply in Castalia and raising her 12 children.She loved children and fostered many children for Catholic Charities and Erie County Children Services for many years. She volunteered for the Red Cross and taught CPR classes at fire departments and Margaretta Schools in her local area. Caroline also loved planting flowers and spent many hours caring for the grounds at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue and spent some time beautifying the grounds at St. Mary's Church in Clyde. In 1990 she graduated as the oldest massotherapist from EHOVE. She then worked for Reed Chiropractic in Clyde until she got sick. She then went to Edwards, Mo., where she fished and enjoyed boating while her daughter Sandra cared for her until she passed.Caroline is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Reed of 676 E. Maple Ave., Clyde; her children, David Reed of Crystal Rock, Caren Blankenship of Vickery, Michael Reed of Clyde, Sandra Fayard of Edwards, Mo., Mary Jo DeChant of Huron, Thomas Reed of Deputy, Ind., James Reed of Deputy, Robert Reed of Fostoria, John Reed Jr. of Bellevue and Paul Reed of Clyde. Caroline has over 93 grand and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister, James of Defiance, Ohio, Eugene of the state of Washington, Marvin of Defiance and Theresa Hohenberger of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Many nieces and nephews also survive.She was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie (Little) and Ralph Hammersmith of Defiance; her husband's parents, Anna Lillan (Davisson) and Coy Reed; her sons, Daniel and Joseph; daughter, Patrice Wilson; two grandsons, Thomas and Shwan Reed; her brothers, Ralph, Donald, William, Richard, George and Robert Hammersmith. A memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center St., Bellevue, officiated by the Rev. Jonathan Wight. A luncheon will be held afterward.
