Coming together for Calvin

PERKINS TWP. — On May 19, Calvin Kegley was picked up by his older sister, Breanna Armstrong.While driving on Strub Road, their car was struck head-on by a driver who veered into their lane.Armstrong turned in an attempt to minimize the impact — an act that probably saved her and her young brother's life. But her car still took the blunt of the collision.Armstrong had a fractured arm that would require surgery, but she insisted that responders care for her brother first.It took the crew an hour to rescue Calvin from the wreckage of the car. A medical helicopter took him to Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland to treat his extensive injuries. It necessitated a risky surgery that fused his vertebrae.Since the accident, Calvin has spent the summer in the hospital wearing a halo, a brace screwed into the skull to hold the spine straight, as his injuries healed.He recently returned home but in a wheelchair.His chances at walking once again are unknown, but the best way to heal is through physical therapy in Cleveland.The Kegley family has started to feel the financial strain caused by his time in the hospital, not to mention costly trips to Cleveland every week for therapy.A GoFundMe page has been established to ease the financial burden on the family."I'm overwhelmed with the support and prayers people are giving us," Calvin's mother Monica Kegley said.
