New market goes above, beyond for customers

VERMILION — A new neighborhood market in Vermilion is offering grab-and-go meals, specialty foods and catering on Vermilion's east side. SUR Market, located at 5312 Liberty Ave. (U.S. 6), is owned by Nikki Dover, who was born in Vermilion and now lives in Amherst. She grew up around small businesses through her father's stores, including Smokin Joe's and Country Breeze, an experience that helped shape the kind of business she wanted to create. The market offers grab-and-go salads, prepared meals and items, such as pastellillos and chicken gyros, for customers looking for quick, high-quality options. Shelves also feature charcuterie items, specialty cheeses, meats, jerky, honey and other curated products that are not commonly found in larger grocery stores. Catering has also become a growing part of the business as more people discover the shop. The market also serves pizza and other prepared foods, and Dover said the menu will continue expanding as kitchen operations grow. Customer feedback has also helped shape offerings, including interest in plant-based and gluten-free items. "I grew up watching my dad build relationships with customers," Dover said. "That's something I've always wanted to bring into my own business." Dover said the business may also explore delivery options in the future.
