Halupki Festival is here again

MARBLEHEAD — It's summertime, and in Marblehead, that means the smell of cabbage rolls and the sounds of polka music will soon be filling the air. The 60th annual Halupki Festival, a celebration of Carpatho-Russian foods and culture, will take place Aug. 21 at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, 114 E. Main St. (Ohio 163), Marblehead.The day's activities begin with Divine Liturgy in the historic church at 9:30 a.m. The choir of SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Lorain will sing at Liturgy, and all are welcome to attend the service. The festival takes place from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and features more than 30 craft vendors, live entertainment from area polka bands, a demonstration of the Rusyn art of Pysanky (Easter egg decorating), refreshments, raffles and children's activities. The festival's famous halupki and ham dinners will be served from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., and at 2:30 p.m., the Carpatho-Russian Ala Carte will open, featuring halupki (cabbage rolls), perohi, halushki (cabbage and noodles), kolbasi (smoked sausage), pagach (Slavic pizza), and Old World-style baked goods, including kolach (nut and poppy seed rolls). The parish church, the oldest Orthodox church in Ohio and a historic landmark, will be open, and tours will be available.
