Detective O'Connell under investigation

Update: Sandusky County sheriff's Captain Sean P. O'Connell was put on paid administrative leave last week, Chief Deputy Bruce Hirt confirmed late Sunday. O'Connell is under investigation for alleged workplace misconduct, Hirt said, for "a matter that recently came to our attention."Hirt declined to provide any further details, citing an ongoing internal investigation. Sheriff Kyle Overmyer signed an order on Friday barring O'Connell from the premises of the sheriff's office. Overmyer did not respond to calls or written inquiries on Sunday. A rift began to develop between Overmyer and O'Connell last year, after O'Connell attempted to override the sheriff's orders and bar the Clyde police from assisting in the Heather Bogle homicide investigation.Bogle was killed April 10, 2015, and her body was found in the trunk of a car outside a Clyde apartment building. Nobody has been arrested. Family members complained bitterly about how O'Connell was conducting the investigation into her death, saying he was providing misleading information to them and wasn't following up on leads they provided him.Overmyer recently told a Toledo news reporter that people who may have information about who killed Heather Bogle would be questioned. The rift between Overmyer and O'Connell continued to grow. In a separate incident in August, O'Connell filed a report with Sandusky County Prosecutor Tom Stierwalt alleging Overmyer did not properly dispose of un-used medications turned in at area police departments that the sheriff collected.County Prosecutor Tom Stierwalt sat on that probe until turning it over to a special prosecutor in February after the Register learned about the and reported it. That investigation is still ongoing. He also did not immediately respond to written inquiries sent to his office and personal email addresses and to his cell phone.The Register asked Overmyer in messages to confirm or discredit the order, and if it was from him, the reasons behind his decision. O'Connell also did not respond to written inquiries. His personal Facebook page lists him as "retired." A sheriff's dispatch supervisor would not confirm the authenticity of the order Sunday evening, or whether it had been delivered to employees on his shift. He referred the inquiry to Chief Deputy Bruce Hirt and the sheriff. The dispatcher was asked to contact the sheriff and/or Hirt and ask that one of them respond to the inquiry.
