Turinsky, Lane, Lazzara named best in district

Bellevue senior Kaitlyn Turinsky, Margaretta senior Cassidy Lane and Norwalk senior Trinity Lazzara were named players of the year in their respective divisions on the All-Northwest District girls basketball team. The teams, selected by media members from the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Media Association, were released Thursday night. Turinsky, who has led defending Division IV state champion Bellevue to a 27-0 record this season, is averaging 12.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and three blocks per game for the Lady Red while rarely playing four quarters. Turinsky, a 6-foot-3 center, will play collegiately for Youngstown State. Bellevue will play Genoa in a Div. IV regional final Saturday in Bluffton. Lane, a 6-0 center, is averaging 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2.7 steals for Margaretta, which was 24-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Division VI entering Thursday's regional semifinal against Ottawa Hills. Lane, one of five players in Division VI to be honored as player of the year, will play collegiately for Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. Lazzara averaged 12.6 points per game this season for the Truckers, who finished their season at 19-7 after losing to Toledo Notre Dame in a Division III regional semifinal late Wednesday. She was one of three players in Div. III to be honored as player of the year. Turinsky and Lane were second team Northwest District picks last year. Lazzara was an honorable mention selection. Two other area players — both in Division IV — were first team selections. Bellevue freshman guard Ava Jakubcin-Theis, who is averaging 12.8 points per game, made the first team, as did Clyde's Taitum Jeffrey. The 5-8 junior averaged 17.1 points and 10.1 rebounds in 17 games this season for the Fliers. She missed the end of the season with an injury. Six area players made the second team in their respective divisions: Norwalk's Emmie Leber (D-III), Bellevue's Ellie Freitag (D-IV), Edison's Ella Booth (D-V), Margaretta's Ellyse Schaefer (D-VI) and St. Mary Central Catholic's Reid Didion and Danbury's Lauren Bergman in Division VII. Sandusky's Maekhiya Rameau (D-III) was the only area player on a third team.
