Briarcrest drowns in red

PERKINS TWP. — Briarcrest Swim Club on Marshall Avenue will not be opening its doors this year.A member representing the private establishment, which is more than 50 years old, recently made a statement on the club's official Facebook page."It is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform you that Briarcrest will not be opening this summer due to financial struggles," according to the statement. "We would like to thank you for all of your support during the years and especially these last few months.A member told the Register on Thursday the club was in the process of being sold.In recent times, a GoFundMe page was created to generate funds for the club's mortgage, insurance premiums and property taxes.Money from membership fees was apparently not enough to keep the club afloat. There were "unnamed events from the recent past that made this fundraising effort necessary," according to an update on the GoFundMe page.In order to stay open, a total of $20,000 needed to be raised by March 31. The goal was not met, so all donations were returned and the doors were shut.It's not known whether Briarcrest will open in 2017 or beyond.
