Best Barbershop, thy name be Benny B's

SANDUSKYAmong the many different ways one can feel pleasure, don't discount a clean shave. Perhaps that's why for centuries the local barbershop was just as packed as the local watering hole or pool hall. Invariably, the barbershop acted as a social hub of activity, gossip and fun.Such is the case at Sandusky's Benny B's Barbershop, which recently won its seventh consecutive Readers' Choice Award for Best Barbershop. "I am surprised I won," said Benny B's owner Benny Byington, who also runs Sandusky Salvage and Design. "It's because we work hard and try to stay on top. We give the best service."That service includes all types of haircuts (for kids through senior citizens), as well as face and head shaves. Walking into Benny B's Barber Shop (434 W. Market St.) is steeped in tradition, making visitors feel as though they're traveling back in time.That is except for the hi-def flat screens and free WIFI. After all, patrons aren't savages. One needs to catch the game or check up on Instagram."We straight razor shave," Byington said. "We lather and use steamed towels. I think it's just a relaxing experience."Benny B's Barbershop opened seven years ago (that's right, it's been an RCA winner every year of its existence) when Byington left behind the Ohio State University campus where he had his own barbershop. After finishing barber school, the 1997 Sandusky High School graduate returned home and hasn't looked back.Up next actually is a new Benny B's Barbershop location he's currently building at 207 Decatur."We're moving because at our current location we're often full," Byington said. "We're too busy a lot of times where we have four or five people waiting for a haircut. So the new location is an old house next to my house. It's just more room, a bigger barbershop. We'll have three chairs. Now I have one chair. I hope to open by the end of this year."Regarding the RCA streak, Byington said, "Thanks a lot. We really appreciate the vote.
