Don't wish; Just climb

A friend of mine, Mac Lehrer, once sent me a quote from Eddie Panero: "The magic isn't in the moon. It's in the staircase that takes you there." Kobe Bryant performed magic on the basketball court, but it came from his legendary "666 Workout" — training six days a week, six hours a day for six months: two hours on skills, two hours on strength, two hours on conditioning. He lived on that staircase. Muhammad Ali seemed to dance in the boxing ring, but those moves were built on 5 a.m. runs, endless shadowboxing and round after round of sparring — and yes, a little poetry about his opponent. Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge found his magic in the hills of Kenya, logging more than 100 miles a week. Each of them understood the same truth: Confidence didn't come first — discipline did. Their greatness wasn't built in big moments. It was built in thousands of quiet ones no one ever saw. I've taught students who desperately wanted to understand math but froze the moment they were challenged. They copied numbers, hoping one might be right. Some stayed silent. Some acted out. But most were simply trying to hide that they were lost. They feared being found out. They hated every minute of that class. They carried their book out with forced confidence, but every walk to the door felt like a quiet defeat they hoped no one noticed. The problem wasn't ability. It was the starting point. The first step rarely looks impressive. It's awkward. Slow. Sometimes humbling. But it's honest — and honest beginnings are what real growth is built on. In every field, people often battle self-worth long before they build skill. Every accomplishment rests on small, repeated steps: showing up, trying again, staying with it when it would be easier to protect pride than improve. Whatever moon you're chasing — a new job, a healthier life, a repaired relationship, or a skill you've always wished you had — it won't come from wishing. It comes from climbing. The magic was never in the moon. It was always in the staircase.
