Crime of passion

Nearly a third of female homicide victims in the United States in recent decades were so-called crimes of passion, involving a lover or an ex-lover.The brutal slaying of Heather Bogle — which occurred one year ago next month — might fall into that statistical category.Investigators have not offered a definitive motive in the case, but one official speculated it could be an incident of romance gone wrong."A crime of passion, torture, a sick fetish — we don't know," Sandusky County Chief Deputy Bruce Hirt said last year.For Josh Feasel, his sister's homicide is defined by its brutality. He strongly suspects Bogle's murder was personal."It was a crime of passion," Feasel said. "That's what's in the autopsy report. It's pretty obvious."A preliminary autopsy showed Bogle had been bound, beaten and shot twice. Her hair was cut to the scalp and there were lacerations on her tongue.Bogle broke off a relationship with Carmella Badillo, formerly of Fremont, just three days before she went missing, according to Feasel.Feasel said he's asked O'Connell about Badillo's possible involvement in Bogle's death multiple times, but O'Connell told him he ruled her out as a suspect almost immediately. The detective would get defensive whenever he brought her name up, Feasel said."He's got tunnel vision for Omar Satchel," Feasel said. "It's just him and Keyona Bor."Feasel doesn't know who killed his sister, and Carmella Badillo has never been a suspect, nor a person of interest.Brandon Canino also is believed to have had a personal relationship with Bogle at one time. He also has never been a suspect.Both Badillo and Canino were listed in the original missing persons complaint as "neutral parties." It's unknown what information they provided police, initially when Bogle turned up missing, or subsequently. Satchel was convicted last week in county court on a weapons charge. He admitted selling a handgun during an interview with O'Connell — a gun O'Connell claimed was involved in her death. O'Connell has blocked access to public records from his case. Bor was named as a suspect, but has not been charged. Bogle's body was found in a vehicle parked outside her Clyde apartment.O'Connell's refused comment on the case for months and it remains unsolved.Feasel, and other members of Bogle's family, have said O'Connell has failed to keep them informed about the investigation. Feasel said previously he would prefer a different detective be assigned to the investigation because O'Connell isn't being straight with the family. He no longer speaks with them and does not return phone calls, Feasel said. But O'Connell's former co-worker at the Fremont police department, retired Sgt. Ed Garza, defended O'Connell in recent days on social media.In a March 20 Facebook post, Garza said unsolved homicides are common in Sandusky County, citing five cases that were never resolved."History has shown how difficult a murder case such as this one can be," Garza wrote. "Let Detective O'Connell do his job and whoever has the information he needs must step forward to bring the coward killers to justice."In the same Facebook post, Garza said he did not know Heather Bogle.But Garza is believed to be related to Carmella Badillo — possibly an uncle, according to members of Bogle's family.When the Register called to inquire about that possible connection, Garza abruptly hung up his phone.When the Register called back, Garza said "Do not call this number again."The Register called a third time and left a message on his voice mail asking Garza if he was related to Carmella Badillo and whether he knew about her relationship with Heather Bogle. Garza never responded to those questions.Law enforcement officers are discouraged from using social media to discuss police business. Posting information about investigations is out right prohibited at some agencies.
