2 win Pioneer Awards

SANDUSKY — On Thursday, Feb. 26, coinciding with the final days of Black History Month, a local team recognized minority entrepreneurs making a major impact. The Minority Business Empowerment Team hosted its fifth Black Business Pioneer Awards ceremony at The Emporium at West Market Street in downtown Sandusky. This annual event: • Celebrates achievements made by local Black business leaders across the greater Sandusky area • Recognizes individuals who both succeed in their ventures and pave the way for future generations of Black entrepreneurs The team serves as a collaborative effort between several entities — such as local minority-owned businesses, area economic development organizations, Sandusky's government, Sandusky Schools, among others —"championing minority business development since its inception in 2020," according to a team statement. During the evening, people could enjoy heavy appetizers, provided by All Things Kozy, and live jazz and R&B music, offered by 447 Soul. 2026 winners Recognizing entrepreneurs is critical to the mission of the Minority Business Empowerment Team, which looks to support minority businesses through direct services and networking opportunities. "We are proud to recognize business leaders whose dedication and resilience have created opportunity not only for themselves, but for others," said Jarvis Cole, the empowerment team's co-chair. "The recipients this year are known as mentors, innovators and champions for our community." More specifically, honors, accompanied by team statements, went to: • Yolanda Churchwell, founder and CEO of The B.A.G.; "A best-selling author and trusted consultant, Churchwell empowers businesses through coaching, operational strategy and leadership development. Her work continues to inspire growth and transformation across industries." • Bill Hill, owner of D.Hilly Clothing Store; "For more than 30 years, Bill Hill has outfitted generations in the community while mentoring youth and supporting fellow local businesses. His longstanding presence and commitment to uplifting others exemplify the spirit of entrepreneurship and service." "The Black Business Pioneer Awards highlight the importance of inclusive economic growth and recognize the entrepreneurs who help build a stronger, more vibrant regional economy," Cole said.
