Vermilion police credited by federal prosecutors

VERMILION — Federal prosecutors recently credited the Vermilion Police Department for assisting an investigation that led to a nine-year federal prison sentence for a Summit County man convicted on child sexual abuse material charges, according to a press release issued this week by the U.S. Department of Justice. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio stated Alejandro James Sosa, 38, of Akron, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison and ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release. Sosa pleaded guilty in November 2025 to receipt and distribution of visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct; possession of child pornography; destruction, alteration or falsification of records in a federal investigation; and obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children, according to the Department of Justice. Prosecutors said the man received and distributed the illegal material and attempted to destroy evidence as federal agents arrived to execute a search warrant. The investigation was led by the FBI Akron Resident Agency with assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Office of Criminal Investigation, an FBI task force and the Vermilion Police Department, the DOJ said. Federal officials emphasized that cooperation between agencies was critical in identifying the offender and securing the conviction, particularly in cases involving online exploitation, where digital evidence and shared intelligence often cross jurisdictional boundaries. Vermilion police have previously said the department handles cyber tip investigations connected to the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children task force, assigning those reports for investigation as part of broader state and federal efforts to combat child exploitation. The Department of Justice said coordinated investigative work and digital forensic tools continue to play a key role in tracking offenders, protecting victims and supporting successful prosecutions.
