PREP ROUNDUP: SMCC rolls past Horizon Science Academy

SANDUSKY — St. Mary Central Catholic met little resistance in its Division VII boys basketball tournament opener Thursday, routing Toledo Horizon Science Academy 58-19. Eleven Panthers scored in the game. Cayden Wikel and Trace Smith each scored nine points to lead the way. The second-seeded Panthers improved to 19-4 on the season while Horizon Science finished at 0-10. SMCC, which has won seven of its last eight games, led 21-0 after the first quarter. The Panthers will face SBC River Division rival Old Fort in a district semifinal at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday at Oregon Clay. The fifth-seeded Redskins outscored third-seeded Otsego 23-12 over the final eight minutes. PC, which finished the season with a 14-9 record, was led by Grayson Jones, who scored 20 points. Landon Leis scored seven of his 11 points in the final period. The Redskins, who trailed 28-14 at halftime, were hurt by a 3-for-11 performance from the free throw line. Otsego, which will play Lake in a district semifinal, was led by Dane Fatzinger (18 points) and Devin Silva (17). West touched the wall in 1:05.95. She'll be in the final heat of eight swimmers. The top 16 from each race will compete in Friday's finals, which begin at 5 p.m. West will join Jasele Ninke, Natalie Mitchel and Hayley Henning in the 200 free relay team that will compete. The quartet finished in 1:42.41. On the boys side, Clyde's Eli Morgan will swim in the consolation finals after finishing 11th in the 500 free (4:48.74). It was seven seconds slower than his district time. Cole Rini from Vermilion advanced in the 100 breast, taking 13th in 59.83. Elsewhere, Port Clinton's Gabrielle Heilman was 23rd in the 50 free in 25.34 seconds. West took 19th in the 200 individual medley in 2:16.27 while the Pirates' 200 medley relay team was disqualified. Lee Higgins from Port Clinton was 26th in the 100 free in 49.26 while Morgan finished 27th in the 200 free in a time of 1:47.00. Perkins' Max Zess finished 29th in the 500 free in 5:05.38 while teammate Preston Miller took 30th in 5:06.38. Rini was 25th in the 200 IM in 2:01.59, PC's Wyatt Siefke was 31st in the 100 butterfly in 56.05 and Norwalk's Lincoln Snyder finished 32nd in the 100 butterfly in 56.19. Port Clinton's group of Jake Adkins, Grant Barnhill, Siefke and Higgins took 17th in the 200 free in 1:30.54. The same group raced in the 400 free relay, but results were not available at press time. BOWLING Sandusky boys 5th at district PORT CLINTON — Sandusky's boys bowling team ended its season with a fifth-place finish at a Division I district tournament at Star Lanes at the Harbor. The Blue Streaks finished with a team total of 3954. The top two teams — Celina (4359) and Ashland (4283) —advanced to the state tournament. Freshman Caiden Brentgartner led the Streaks with a 634 series. He had games of 210, 194 and 230 to finish eighth overall. Senior Hunter Straub rolled a 606 series (194, 207, 205) to finish 12th. Seniors Landen Ebeling (582) and Blake Ott (579) finished 21st and 22nd, respectively. Ashland's Landon Dreibelbis rolled a 780 series to lead the field. Individual qualifying spots went to Clay's Niko Lockhart (717) and Columbian's Atreyu Sturgill (686). Norwalk freshman Ashton Kolk rolled games of 132, 185 and 168 for a 485 series.
