Sharks snag swimming medals

SANDUSKY — Like Team USA at the Winter Olympics, several local athletes returned home with many medals after competing against the best in intense competitions. The Erie County Sharks brought back several honors during the 2026 Special Olympics Winter Games from Feb. 20-22 at Ohio State University in Columbus. Who won what? Among those on the Sharks placing: • Chris Collins — 25-meter freestyle, fourth place • Carrie Eckert — 100-meter freestyle, gold medal — 4x25-meter freestyle relay, silver medal — 50-meter freestyle, silver medal • Liam Fisher — 25-meter freestyle, bronze medal — 50-meter freestyle, bronze medal • Morgan Foote — 100-meter freestyle, gold medal — 4x25-meter freestyle relay, silver medal — 50-meter freestyle, gold medal • Jonathan Ray — 100-meter freestyle, silver medal — 4x25-meter freestyle relay, silver medal — 50-meter freestyle, fifth place • Sam West — 4x25-meter freestyle relay, silver medal — 50-meter breaststroke, silver medal — 50-meter freestyle, silver medal Beaming with pride Still within its first year, this local swim team dived right into the deep end, going up against top-level competition. Through it all, these local athletes remained confident, fierce and fearless, on the hunt to assert their dominance. For the past few months, leading up to this past weekend's Olympic Games, members on the Sharks rigorously practiced. They honed their talents at the Sandusky Aquatic Center at Sandusky High School. Those on the Sharks qualified for the state meet by previously posting fast enough times in various events. "It's an incredible experience," said Lisa Cassel, who serves as head coach. Cassel beamed with pride talking about her team, emphasizing how members competed against top Special Olympic athletes from all across Ohio. "They had a long six-month season to prepare for the winter games, and, during that time, they strengthened their skills and endurance, something that truly paid off in the end," Cassel said. She continued: "I'm proud of each of them and how far they've come this season as well as how much they've grown as athletes. Not only did they put in the hard work, but they also brought great attitudes and had fun along the way."
