Cedar Point announces more 2016 programs, end of some rides

topey@sanduskyregister.comCedar Point is giving roller coaster enthusiasts what they dreamed of- heights and access.Cedar Point executives announced Saturday during its Winter Chill Out event the latest changes coming to the park.One of those changes is the introduction of The Sunrise Thrills Tour.For the first time ever guests can get a look at the park coasters before the park opens. This year will give an up-close look at Valravn. Enthusiasts can watch start up procedures, ride safety, technical operations and learn about the extra wide trains. But what is sure to drive the program is the climb to the top of Valravn's first hill 223 feet high into the air.A price has yet to be set for this program."We're still in the planning stages of these new programs, so we will have more information at a later date," said Tony Clark, Director of Communications Cedar Fair.Access comes with Cedar Point's planned The Ride Warriors Club.This program is a members only group that for $120 a season offers private ride times on some of the most popular rides throughout the season, access to invitation-only events and private question-and-answer sessions with park management."We launched these programs to give guests additional special experiences that will enhance their visit with us. We're confident that they will create once-in-a-lifetime memories for our guests," Clark said about both programs.They also announced a few ride changes.* Cedar Point confirmed Shoot the Rapids is no more. They are also getting rid of Skyscraper and Challenge Racing.The Sandusky Register reported last week that the Shoot the Rapids water ride was being dismantled.The park did not disclose what these rides would be replaced with.Cedar Fair Chief Executive Officer and president Matt Ouimet has long held the belief that Cedar Point should value its history but if guests are not voting to keep rides by riding them then those with low ridership will be removed. This is necessary to make way for new rides in a land-locked Cedar Point that will keep the park vibrant for guests.* The Dodgem bumper car rides will get new cars.* The Raptor and Top Thrill Dragster roller coasters will receive a fresh coat of paint in their original colors.As well as a few changes to the food and drink menu* Frontier Inn is a new restaurant landing near the Maverick roller coaster. This replaces the former Chick-fil-A.* Coca-Cola Oasis is a beverage station just inside the main entrance. It will offer refillable souvenir drink bottles.This years guests at Winter Chill Out raised $40,000 for A Kid Again, an organization that fosters hopes and memories for children with life threatening illnesses and their familiesCedar Point opens for the season Saturday, May 7.
