An engaging Edison movie event

MILAN — Many people — including those representing Shores & Islands Ohio, the area's tourism bureau — attended the Ohio Goes to the Movies kickoff event and Milan Town Hall on Feb. 11. It coincided with the birthday of Thomas Edison, a Milan native. Officially, it was known as A Night at the Movies with Mr. Edison. This marked an America 250-Ohio signature event that also launched a yearlong series of free events, including film screenings throughout February. Each participating venue is planning its own unique event with pre- and post-event activities in addition to screening a movie of its choice. In Milan, "We selected a mix of Edison films that showcase the variety of early motion pictures," said Cindi Rospert, director of the Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan. The program included "comedy, drama and even early advertising, which reflects the breadth of the work that emerged from Edison Studios," Rospert added. "These engaging short films — 'Jack & The Beanstalk' from 1902, 'Frankenstein' and 'Alice in Wonderland' from 1910 — highlight how motion pictures quickly became both entertainment and social commentary." Additionally, the event featured an Edison impersonator as an emcee, welcoming the audience and sharing background on Edison's early life in Milan along with his role in film history. "Mr. Edison" introduced each film and explained its importance. Guests could ask questions and take part in a post-screening discussion. Special guests in attendance included Ohio Gov.
