Dockside docked at marina for many more years

SANDUSKY — With a new deal, local officials anchored a popular waterfront dining establishment at a marina for a few more years. During a recent public meeting, Sandusky city commissioners extended an agreement with Dockside Cafe so owner Andrea Crawford and her staff can continue operating its kitchen at the Paper District Marina off West Shoreline Drive beside Chesapeake Lofts. The new deal keeps Dockside entrenched there — serving items like walleye tacos, burgers, salads, quesadillas and other tasty treats from a city-run boating facility — through 2028. In return, the city receives a small monthly facility fee to cover costs for utilities, garbage/recycling and restroom cleaning. An appetizing option A seasonal business, Dockside typically operates in the late spring and summer months. Officials selected Dockside, first debuting at this space in 2012, after going through a proposal system. Only one other company submitted a bid to do business there. "Dockside Hospitality's proposal was scored and determined to be the best proposal," according to a memo sent by Jason Werling, the city's recreation superintendent. Werling's memo noted a committee evaluated several factors, such as a proprietor's ability to keep this facility operating and staffed. Additionally, Dockside's positive history with Sandusky's government and the community at large also helped. "The strong and successful partnership the city has had with Dockside the past 14 years has proved to be a positive move for the operation and management of the Paper District Marina's concession space." This deal also allows Dockside an opportunity to offer programming at the adjacent amphitheater space. "The city will benefit from Dockside's operation of the marina concession area by continuing to make the space an attraction for residents and visitors to the area," the statement read. Among the city commissioners supporting this agreement include ex officio mayor Kate Vargo. "We are proud to see Dockside continue its success on our city's waterfront," Vargo said. "They have consistently delivered a one-of-a-kind outdoor dining experience on our treasured shoreline. Their commitment to quality and community has made them a valued partner and an important part of the downtown waterfront." 'See you in May' Crawford, who also operates Crush Wine Bar, thanked commissioners for their ongoing faith in her business. "We are very excited to continue operating Dockside Cafe at the Paper District Marina," Crawford said. "We are looking forward to this summer, season No. 15, and many more to come." And Crawford emphasized how she's more committed than ever to make Dockside, whether for boaters zipping up or pedestrians walking, an enjoyable experience for all. "I personally feel that, when going into business, whether you rent the space or own it, you give it your all — every day and every year — to build it as we have," Crawford said. "Solidifying the lease with the city of Sandusky shows they feel we have done a great job and, of course, want us to continue our efforts. See you in May."
