Five hurt in holiday parade crash in Fremont

FREMONT — At least five people were injured in an accident after things went awry during an Independence Day parade in Fremont.A press release issued by Police Chief Dean Bliss says that officers were dispatched at 10:31 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Croghan Street and South Arch.The officers discovered that a historic tow truck taking part in the July 4 parade had lost control and crashed into two farm tractors, the chief said.At least five people were hurt and were treated in the emergency room of ProMedica Memorial Hospital in Fremont. One person was then taken to a Toledo area hospital by medical helicopter, the chief said.The parade was stopped after the crash. The chief said the crash remains under investigation and that he doesn't have further details yet.The chief said the truck will be examined to determine the cause of the crash. A full report will be issued later, he said.An eyewitness writing about the crash on Facebook, Cory Hull of Fremont, wrote that the driver of the truck swerved to avoid a worse injury.Hull wrote that he saw a man holding a little girl who was hit by the truck."I will never forget the feeling of watching that girl fall underneath the truck as her dad was hit and hurled to the side," he wrote. "If it wasn't for the truck driver whipping the wheel into the back of that trailer, her head would have been crushed."Angela Ash, a Fremont resident who posted photographs from the scene on Facebook, wrote that it appeared the tow truck had lost its brakes.
