Hoying, Keller, Hammond named coaches of the year

Three area coaches were named Coach of the Year in their respective divisions in the District 6 honors that were announced Tuesday. Perkins' Andy Hoying (Div. IV), Margaretta's Steve Keller (Div. V) and St. Mary Central Catholic's Kyle Hammond (Div. VII) were awarded the top honor among coaches. Perkins (19-2) hosts Norwalk in its regular-season finale Friday with a chance to win a share of the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division title. The Pirates have been ranked in the top-10 of Div. IV throughout the season. Margaretta (18-3) closes out of the regular season Friday at Old Fort. The Polar Bears won their third straight SBC Bay Division title last Friday when they thumped Willard. SMCC (17-4) finishes the regular season against Woodmore on Friday. The Panthers can finish tied for second overall in the SBC River with a win. SMCC has a pair of victories over likely league champion Gibsonburg this season. Four area players were represented on the first team in Div. IV: Perkins' Kellen Glass (13.3 points per game), Clyde's Oscar Webb (14 PPG) and Bellevue's Sam Bollinger (13.5) and Ike Brown (13.2). Julian Washington was named the Player of the Year in Div. V after scoring 25.3 points a night. Washington will be the district representative for the North-South game in the small schools game. He was joined on the first team by teammate Judah Keller (13.1), Edison's Cole Leimeister (21.2) and Huron's Quentin Conway (15.6). There were five area players on the first team in Div. VII: SMCC's Cayden Wikel (13 PPG), Monroeville's Maverick Myers (14 PPG) and Cole Perry (13 PPG), Danbury's Frankie Kovach (25 PPG) and St. Paul's Landon Fries (17 PPG). Sandusky senior Dale Johnson (15.1 PPG) was the lone area representative on the first team in the combined Div. II and Div. III team. Blue Streaks junior Camrion Jones (12.8) was a second-team pick.
