75 years ago, 1942: The results of the scrap rubber campaign between June 15 and July 1 were described as "very disappointing," by the executive secretary of general salvage in Ohio. The scrap rubber turned in to gas stations thus far amounted to less than half of that expected. All Ohioians were urged to hunt out every scrap of rubber that yet remained.50 years ago, 1967: Local vandals went off on a new tangent. Coast Guardsmen were called out to return two boats to their docks. Set adrift were: the Cedar Point Ferry and the Challenger. The two ferries were recovered by the Cedar Point and Marblehead Coast Guard stations.25 years ago, 1992: Iran, aided by Syria, was using government presses to print perhaps billions of dollars in "nearly perfect" counterfeit U.S. $100 bills, a congressional task force said. The aim was to destabilize the U.S. economy while easing Iran's deficit and buying influence around the world. The cash had shown up in Europe, Asia and Africa, where Iran was trying to spread Islamic fundamentalism.10 years ago, 2007: One owner out and another was in at the Norwalk Star View Drive-In Theater. The establishment, built in 1949, had been sold to local residents Janet Doughty and Steve Witter. The pair was to officially take over the nostalgic landmark by week's end. Both had worked on and off at the drive-in for the last 30 years and planned to keep the family-friendly theater in operation.
