It's a great time to be an American

We know that with current events and the state of the country's politics, it really doesn't feel that way. But it's 2026, representing America's semiquincentennial 250th anniversary — being recognized and celebrated under the America 250 banner of events set to take place throughout this year and centering around Independence Day, July 4. Let's use this opportunity to reflect on the nation's history, challenges and accomplishments — what makes America truly great. Let's hone in on the lessons we've learned over 250 years as a nation and take that away with us into the future. In its early days, America was a fledgling democracy that offered inspiration to those in other nations still governed by an absolute monarch that they, too, might one day enjoy the same freedom and liberties as the Americans. Our area, too, has a rich and storied history. From being a home to Native American tribes to the initial American settlers in the "Firelands" — lands granted to Connecticut residents whose properties were burned by the British during the Revolutionary War — in the early 19th century to the area's development as a hub of industry and trade to the present day, there's a lot to remember and celebrate.
