NORTHWOOD — Danbury's defense led the way to a 34-24 girls basketball Sandusky Bay Conference River Division win at Northwood on Friday. The Lakers (11-10, 7-6 SBC River) limited Northwood to five or fewer points in three quarters. Lauren Bergman led Danbury with 20 points and Charley Lenthe added 11 points. Shortly after the win over the Mounties, Monroeville (14-5, 10-3 FC) learned that Firelands Conference rival St. Paul had defeated Plymouth on two free throws with 1.6 seconds left. The win by the Flyers helped the Eagles clinch no worse than a share of the program's first FC title since the 1983-84 season. Against Mapleton, Monroeville led 22-16 after one quarter and 44-31 at halftime. Cole Perry paced the Eagles with 20 points while Derek Ackerman had 13 points and Maverick Myers scored eight points. Monroeville can win the league title outright next Friday at home against South Central (10-10, 4-8). Monroeville won in Greenwich by a 70-57 score back on Jan. 21.
