Sandusky beats Clyde to keep pace in Lake

CLYDE — A balanced basketball team is hard to beat. In a high-flying basketball game, Sandusky defeated Clyde 84-71 in Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division action Friday night. On a night that saw the Blue Streaks have three quarters with over 20 points, the Fliers could not keep pace as Dale Johnson erupted for 27 points. That helped Sandusky outdistance Clyde for three quarters before emptying their bench in the fourth quarter. With the win, Sandusky (12-7 overall) kept pace with Perkins as both teams will enter the last week of the regular season with 8-1 records in the conference. Perkins won 52-40 over Bellevue. The Streaks will go to Bellevue on Wednesday while Perkins hosts Norwalk next Friday. Sandusky has won four straight Lake titles. In the first quarter, Sandusky got even scoring as all five starters reached the scoring column with Anthony Redding and Camrion Jones both having six points. Behind that even scoring, Sandusky led 24-14 after eight minutes. In the second quarter, the high-paced game continued as the Streaks erupted for 32 points in the frame with Johnson contributing 13 points. In the third quarter, Sandusky rode the play of Kymirr Hunter who scored seven of his 13 points. Clyde (9-11, 2-7) got five from Michael Scruggs, which all came from the free throw line. The fourth quarter featured the Fliers outscoring Sandusky 21-8 behind seven points from Oscar Webb. On the night, the Streaks had four players in double figures. Johnson led the way with a game-high 27 while Jones added 17. Anthony Redding and Hunter each chipped in 13 points. The Fliers were led by Chase Castle with 16 points and Oscar Webb with 13. Sandusky will end its regular-season home schedule by hosting Fremont Ross on Saturday afternoon. Clyde has the weekend off before hosting Port Clinton on Thursday. The Streaks entered the night as the No. 4 seed in the Division III Northwest Liberty-Benton/Ontario district. The Fliers are the No. 6 seed in the Div. IV Northwest Group A district, which will give teams the opportunity to go to either Fremont Ross or Mansfield Senior for the district tournament. The tournament draw is Sunday with tournament play starting the week of Feb. 23.
