Port Clinton makes 13 3s to fend off Edison

MILAN TWP. — Two things prevailed in the second half for Port Clinton. The Redskins started to make more 3-pointers and their defense was able to limit Edison forward Coltyn Meagrow in check after he put on quite the display in the first half. The result was a 63-56 Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division win for Port Clinton over the Chargers. Tre Armendariz hit a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter to give the Redskins (14-7, 4-6 SBC Bay) the lead for good at 38-36. Port Clinton would push the lead to as high as 13 points late in the fourth period. Armendariz scored all 10 of his points in the third when the Redskins went from being down six (29-23) to being up eight (47-39) heading into the fourth period. Port Clinton outscored Edison 24-10 in the third quarter while making seven 3s. The Redskins, who came out of the third quarter with a 47-39 lead, controlled the fourth period throughout, making enough free throws to fend off the Chargers (8-11, 2-8). The player of the game was Grayson Jones, who led Port Clinton with a team-high 23 points, including 12 in the second half. He made five 3s. Zach Speer played a good game as well and finished with 11 points. The Redskins made 13 3s and had six two-point baskets. Port Clinton coach Jared Rhode said his club needed to break out. "We've been shooting too well in practice not to break out," he said. "They kind of hung back in the paint, which might've been because Landon Leis scored 25 points in our first game against them." Rhode also discussed the halftime adjustments. "We decided to stick with Tre and start him in the second half. He had all 10 of his points in the third quarter and gave us a heck of a spark," Rhode said. "We used a triangle-and-two on Meagrow (in the second half)." Rhode showered praise on a number of his players. "Zach Speer did a nice job — he was a good presence for us (defensively). Grayson was his usual self, he was great. He's the gas for our car," Rhode said. "And Danny Baker is a phenomenal kid. He's all about the team, he embraces the team. He's a good kid, and I say that good things happen to good kids." There were nine lead changes in the first half, including five in the second quarter. Meagrow — who had a game-high 24 points — and Jones, despite the fact that they play different positions, had a bit of a duel going. Meagrow had 17 points while Jones scored 11 points, including three 3s. Meagrow's dunk closed out the first half scoring for Edison.
