Design approved for future Norwalk PK-8 facility

NORWALK — Norwalk Schools recently approved the schematic design for its planned prekindergarten through eighth-grade building. It's a step superintendent Brad Cooley said moves the long-discussed project into a more detailed phase of development. The district granted approval to architect Garmann Miller on Feb. 4, following what Cooley described as months of preparation. "It was a significant step toward moving to the design and development phase, and it was the culmination of nine months of intensive planning, visiting other school districts, and discussing our needs and wants for our new PK-8 school," Cooley said. Schematic design establishes the building's overall layout, size and footprint, decisions that allow a project to begin taking more concrete shape, according to Cooley. Plan in place With those factors now determined, Cooley said the district can shift its attention toward technical aspects that will define how the building functions day to day. "Since the general layout, square footage, and footprint is now determined, our collective focus turns to plumbing, HVAC, electric, water, interior design, including types of flooring as well as site elevation and soil evaluation," he said. The approval also allows construction management company C.T. Taylor to begin the bid process, which will offer more accurate cost estimates for the project. That phase is often a point of reference for large public construction efforts, as it provides the first detailed look at pricing tied directly to finalized design elements. "Our plan is to break ground this summer and to take advantage of the great Ohio weather, especially before conditions become a bit more unpredictable in late fall and winter," Cooley said. Looking ahead Once work begins, the construction site along Shady Lane Drive is expected to remain active for roughly three years. "It will be exciting for our community to drive on Shady Lane and see progress happening," Cooley said. The building is scheduled to open for the 2029–30 academic year and is expected to serve generations of students. "New builds are always great, but it is even more so here knowing that this construction will benefit tens of thousands of Norwalk students and families," he said. The project recently received a financial boost from an anonymous donor who contributed $400,000 toward purchasing the acreage required for the site. Cooley said the gift preserved funds within the roughly $100 million budget established for the school. "With that generous gift, $400,000 did not have to be deducted from the $100 million established for this project," he said. "We have big-hearted people in this town, and they continue to answer the call when it matters the most." While major design decisions are now in place, Cooley said community involvement remains important as the project advances. The district is encouraging businesses and individuals interested in contributing money, labor or materials to reach out as planning continues. Plans call for recognizing donors inside the completed building — a feature Cooley said is intended to reflect the community support behind the project while encouraging future philanthropy. "Our history and donor walls will hopefully inspire future philanthropy," he said.
