Police: Man killed dog

PERKINS TWP. — A Sandusky man is facing a felony charge after being accused of purposely suffocating a pet dog. Just after 3 p.m. on Saturday, officers were called to a home in the 400 block of Douglas Drive for the report of a man who killed the family's dog. When they arrived, a woman told officers that Tyler D. Waddington, 33, got upset with the family pet, named Ollie, after the dog got into a trash can, according to a Perkins police report. The woman told officers that Waddington said Ollie was an older dog and it was "time to go," the report states. Waddington then allegedly placed Ollie into a garbage bag and purposely suffocated the pet. When Ollie was dead, Waddington reportedly placed the bag containing the dog in an exterior trash receptacle along with other bags of trash. The woman then retrieved Ollie from the trash and placed him on the home's back patio under a blanket. Officers confirmed Ollie was dead. After conferring with a prosecutor, it was determined that Waddington would be charged with cruelty to a companion animal, a fifth-degree felony. Waddington later showed up at the police station and turned himself in. When officers asked him what occurred that day, he said his dog died, the report states. When officers asked him to elaborate, he reportedly said he was not ready to talk about it. He was taken to Erie County Jail and incarcerated under a no-bond order until his initial appearance in Sandusky Municipal Court. Waddington has a plea hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday. As of Tuesday, he has been released from jail on bond.
