SANDUSKY — A local construction company won a recent bid to tear down two dilapidated structures in Sandusky, furthering the city's constant fight against blight. During a recent public meeting, Sandusky-based Ed Burdue & Co. submitted a price of about $27,600 to pursue demolition work at a pair of local sites: • A home at 1122 E. Parish St., which recently came down • An accessory structure at 810 Franklin St., which should come down before March 1 Regarding the $27,600: • About $21,900 comes from federal funds specifically geared toward improving neighborhoods • About $5,800 coming from local funds But a rebate should come back to Sandusky. "All costs related to the demolitions will be charged to the owners and assessed to the property," according to a city statement, acknowledging the local government will recoup funds through taxes. Since 2019, through the city's community development office, about 50 Sandusky-based homes deemed unsalvageable have either come crashing down or are contracted to be razed. "By addressing blight, the city is working to improve public safety by eliminating unsafe structures; enhance neighborhood appearance and quality of life for residents; encourage reinvestment and redevelopment in vacant lots; and reduce maintenance costs associated with abandoned buildings," city community development administrator Nicole Grohe said.
