SANDUSKY — Sandusky Schools' next superintendent will be chosen from a list of four finalists. The candidates come from across Ohio, including one presently in the local area. Here's a look at the final four along with their current employers and present-day positions: • Luther Johnson, area superintendent, Columbus Schools • Julie McDonald, assistant superintendent, Huron Schools; For about 20 years, McDonald served as Sandusky's chief academic officer, overseeing curriculum along with academic programming and initiatives. • Stephen Sturgill, executive director of Wraparound Services and Operations, Lorain Schools; For about three years, Sturgill served as Sandusky's chief of staff and transformation officer • Brandon Towns, Heights High School principal, Cleveland Heights–University Heights Schools Searching for the next super In February 2025, the district's former superintendent, Dan Rambler, submitted his letter of resignation in which he stated he was leaving the district to "pursue another opportunity." He stayed on until summer when that school year ended. Rambler effectively completed a three-year contract he signed upon becoming Sandusky's superintendent in mid-2022. During each year of his three-year contract, Rambler's salary totaled $143,000 annually. The district's chief of staff and transformation officer, Dennis Muratori, has since served as interim superintendent. Beginning in the fall, district officials ramped up the process to find a permanent successor in collaboration with Kristi Robbins of the Ohio School Boards Association. Officials also turned to community members to gather input on what stakeholders want to see in its next leader. A job listing for the position was posted for five weeks and received 19 applications. After an initial screening, district leaders narrowed down the candidate field to eight, then, following interviews, to the final four applicants. "The board truly appreciated the opportunity to meet such a strong group of candidates and learn more about their leadership experiences and commitment to students," board president Martha Murray said. "We are grateful for the interest in serving Sandusky City Schools and are excited to move forward with candidates who reflect our community's values and our shared commitment to student success." The school board's next step will be to conduct reference checks and background screenings for each candidate. Another round of interviews is scheduled for this coming week, and a final interview is expected to take place in the days following. After the interviews, the district will announce its permanent superintendent.
